How the hell is it a pointless game? The point of friendlies is to get match fit for the start of the season, its still a 90min game and the players will get fitter, so hardly pointless is it?

they need to be tested and play a higher standard of opposition in my opinion

We played Athlone in a pre season friendly over twenty years ago.

Battering Tavistock and Bodmin before our promotion season didnt do us any harm.

Whilst you're right regarding match fitness, the friendlies we've arranged so far are all against far lesser opposition, where we will dominate the ball, something we will not do in the majority of league games.

We need to play against one, probably two, good sides who are better than us and will make our players do the hard yards and make us work on shape. I'm sure the club have got this type of opposition in the pipeline though. If I was involved at the club, I'd include Milan playing at LR as part of the Adel deal.

I'm sure a man who's been a manager for 30 odd years knows a thing or 2 about pre season friendlies and I'm sure he knows what's best for his team.

Friendlies are for fitness purposes ONLY.

Helps beating teams as regardless of oppo it creates confidence. Hardly gonna help is playing top clubs & getting thumped every game.

I won a free night at The Conrad Hotel in Dublin at a work function. This might have to be used for 02 August. *Starts looking at flights*...

Shamrock Rovers should be a decent game, they gave Spurs a decent game at WHL in the EUROPA League a year or two back? Athlone are useless!
"Imagine a relationship that went wrong but you held on in there for years: that's what it is like supporting a football team. Your loyalty to a team can never die. Ties are stronger than they could ever be with a woman. If she goes and sleeps with your best mate, it's over. If the Rs' boss, Ian Holloway, slept with my best mate, QPR would still be my team. Even if many of the things that you loved about going to matches have gone - terraces, team shirts without sponsors and being able to smoke at grounds - you still stick with your team." - Peter Doherty.
