We've got to stop loading up with players over 30 especially in areas on the park where we have no pace ie pretty much everywhere. We have to start thinking longer term but I'm afraid that wont happen under Harry.

Truthfully though I think he'd be good for a season, was Fulham's top scorer somehow last season and I reckon he's better than Henry and O'Neill like others have stated.

Barton is an OK player and showed great attitude last season which won over all the fans. Fair play to him for that. But in the play off final the stats showed he misplaced substantially more than half his passes - against Derby. Is that going to be good enough against Swansea, forget Man City or Chelsea? I'm not saying bomb him out of the squad because he is clearly a lot better than Henry, O'Neil etc but think his cult status over the last year is in danger of clouding sober judgement about his ability - which is decent, but in Prem terms, nothing special.

yeah, agreed. Once Barton is back playing against Yaya Toure and Nemanja Matic every week he'll suddenly look much worse and most on here will mistake it for a lack of effort. People will say his attitude stinks and he's too arrogant. All those hollywood balls he sends out for goal kicks will seem worse as we won't have enough possession to waste, and he'll be up against tricky no10s who can give him the runaround most weeks.

I do like Barton but, as I've said for ages, Rangers fans underrated him (or at least his effort) in the PL and overrated him in the Championship.

Pretty uninspiring signing isn't it? 30 something year old that has previously played for our 2 biggest rivals.

All that said, he'll probably do a decent job and is probably better than any central midfielder we have at the club already. I just hope if we do get him it's on a sensible contract that isn't too long.......don't want another situation like Cesar or Andy Johnson where we are lumbered with him long after he is any use to us!

he'd be ok for a year as a squad player but we must invest in a young cm to compliment a barton/sidwell type. I think barton will be fine in the prem just through gritt and determination. He'll be our leader and I think he will be so important to us staying up.

Haven't seen him play lately, but assuming he is close to as good as he used to be, would improve our squad and would therefore be a good signing, provided the wages are reasonable and he has the right attitude coming here (not really a "big" name so I'd hope it would work out on that score). Remember, it is a long season and depth is as important as the first eleven.

I don't mind the fact he is over 30. My thought there is that we should not pay big transfer fees for older players and he is a free agent so no problem on that score. You definitely need some experience in your squad.
