Alvin Martin saying the same now:

"I think Rio will want to stay [in England]. Working with Harry again would be a big pull for him. Harry is made for Rio.

He’s somebody who lets you get on with it and gives you a lift when you need it. Rio will know that Harry does believe in him and I think he will bring the best out of him."

There must be some rumblings behind the scene for all this talk to emerge.

If the deal works for both parties then i have no issue for a rolling 1 year contract. If fit, he eclipses any defenders we have even at 35, it's as simple as that.

But his back is a major concern, so why not a modest ish wage (by prem standards) but subsidised by a significant match bonus when he plays. If he stays fit, combined it would equate to a standard wage, but if he's regularly injured and doesnt play, our outlay and liability is reduced.

That said, if he is over the back issue now, the spin would be he's beeen used sparingly the last few years so has plenty of fuel in the tank to carry on another couple of years at least.... also the thing with clever CB's who read the game so well, they can play longer than the hard tackling equivelent. Rio is in the Baresi / Maldini mould and no reason he couldnt play as long as they did at a decent level.

The thought of Rio's nouse and Onouha's pace at CB is actually very appealing. Plus the likes of Onouha, Simpson and all the youngsters at the club could learn a load off him as he;s arguably the best defender this country has seen for years.

if he was willing to have a modest 'pay when fit' salary with a bonus for staying in the Premiership, then why not?

A younger CB would be good (although Donaldson and Ehmer could learn a lot from him for next season), but would probably cost a decent transfer fee and want a decent wage too.

About the same age as Dunne who almost single handedly won us the final with his defending on Saturday....... Opposite types of defenders, but over the years people in the game would say Rio is on a different level altogether to Dunne.

Plus Rio's game style is less impacted by age than the likes of Dunne.

Ok,ok. give him a chance then. Onuaha is faster? Dunne and Rio F. is another pairing which I think we will play.

i wouldnt listen to the shyte advice that warnkock has given. look at the dross he signed when he was last in the prem league.

luke young, anton ferdinand, swp, bothroyd and campbell. lets not mention barton though as it was clear at the time that he was a fernandes marquee signing.

as for rio, no thanks, would rather dawson or caulker any day of the week

Ditto Ryan Nelson who played a starring role for us in 2012/13.

Why do people still try to rewrite history? Its common knowledge those were never his preferred signings mate. They were the best of the scraps available due to zero funds being made available to him until the 11th hour. This really is going over old ground now.

what about the experience he could bring? he could join us for a season then join backroom staff? at least he'll be at the club.

also - think the club shop will be able to pass off some of Anton's old kits now we've got thin hoops again

I often wonder how different things would have been if he had just accepted that those lot were not good enough, hung on and saved his budget until January and bought some proper players.

Would quite possibly still be here.

But then we wouldn't have had last Saturday.

True, but although people slate half of them signings now, initially they all hit the ground running. Luke Young was excellent, Anton decent, SWP awesome at first (remember the Newcastle 0-0 game) and we did really well..... When we beat Stoke in November we went 8th in the league!! Ironically it was from there it went downhill and Warnock couldnt buy a result then lost the dressing room.
