  • The "Fortress" That Could Be Loftus Road

The recent comments of Jim Magilton got me thinking. He made the point that the players were "nervous". The instant reaction was to point to the fact that players should not be nervous, but feel excited about playing in front of our crowd. The reality, as proved this season our better performances have been away from home and it can only be, that the level of expectation is lower when go on our travels to say when we are playing the likes of Blackpool or Peterborough United and the players so far seem to thrive on playing away from Loftus Road.

Over the years loftus road used to be reconised by many professionals as one of the most intimidating places to play in the country, that has long evaporated. Some will point to the off the field situation and others will simply say its the not the same as the good old days. Seating at the stadiums has made alot of difference to the atmosphere generated, but Loftus Road is hardly a scary place to play nowadays. Also, fans are more critical, as it is barely a working class game anymore and a larger proportion of our income is spent on watching the club we all love and that makes more critical, when a simple pass goes astray or the team underperform we boo and or scream obscenties with our level of expectations being much higher. We look over at the board we have and this leads to great disappointment, when things don't pan how we expect.

Players thrive on an atmosphere and you only have to go back a few years to see what an impact we can make. Would be great to get this back, postivity from the crowd does filter down to the players. its so easy to boo and its become the norm in todays modern football, but wouldn't it be great to generate such an atmopshere, it can in many circumstances give that edge of opposing teams. I wish the club would encourage all the singers into one area. For some reason the "p" block is empty and it would be great to get another 200 loud people in that section? maybe advertise, the vocal support section. I'm sure many fans are isolated trying to get some kind of atmosphere going, where they are grouped in ones and twos.

I know its very difficult to bite your lip, when we are losing. I find that very difficult!! but, I'm sure the players feel that added pressure, with a slightly uneasy feel to our home crowd. No-one is expecting to return to the days of "kness up mother brown", but the mighty roar of "Come on your r's" or "we love rangers" very rarely happens. You can see how players get lifted when we are behind them, someone like Buzsacky must feel like a million dollars when his song gets sang. End of the day, we are like all other championship supporters, we sing when we are winning and groan when are losing. I just think, the club should maximise the efforts of the fans who want to get the atmosphere rocking, by advertising the fact that a certain area is designated for singing.

I'm sure, once the players can feel, that we are totally behind them, in turn the nervousness might disappear. We will never get rid of the booing and finger poitning at players, but the place needs to be a bit more of a positive place to visit for home supporters. I'm sure if we have any aspirations of a play off spot, we the fans can contribute postively

Good post pete, but it is a very small minority that boo the players, but you are right that we do need to try and get some positive atmosphere back at LR.

Frankly its so bad these days its embarrising, if the club designated the upper or lower loft as the singers area, it may get most of the ground joining in.
        They seek him here.................

We've got a similar problem England had at Wembley a year or so ago, where the players are nervous infront of expectant home fans.

A bit more support from the home fans and a few wins will boost confidence and make LR a fortress where teams hate to come and play.

That problem largely went with the Sven/McLaren era, when Capello picked players that deserved to play and not just from the same list.

I think QPR's problem is largely down to the manager who has picked strange teams until Saturday and after such a great win in Wales, from largely so called senior players, there is no need to change the team for Wednesday. He has a well balanced team now which should only be changed for injuries.

Good post Pete. Although I have my fair share of considered and thought through (hopefully) criticisms of stuff on the board, I never ever have a go at a player during the match, and I think the only time I would do would be if a player blatantly wasn't trying.

Fans who heckle players are partaking in a self-fulfilling prophecy and only harming their own enjoyment - their heckling reduces the chances of us winning. I also think these fans are generally not the brightest. They go an about how they 'pay their money so they can say what they like' but that's just simplistic. If they honestly want us to do well, then it takes some effort on our part too.

Regarding the songs, I think songs like Captain Jack are useless and a waste tbh. The songs we should be singing to really rouse the players are simple ones. There is nothing better than hearing large sections of the stadium singing the plain and simple 'Come On You R's". Other songs about individual players are great too, and we need more of them, especially if a player isn't doing well.

Anyway, I have gone on long enough. But fans have to realise they have a role to play, and to them I say muck in or muck off! ;)

I wish Loftus Road would go back to the 'fortress' it once was, but its going to take a lot of doing. I agree with your post Pete, its spot on.

Perhaps a mass advertisement on all forums saying that for one game and one game only any vocal support, willing to try and get the atmosphere going again, sits in the loft, and the blocks next to it in SAR and Ellerslie. If we do generate a good atmosphere then maybe it could be the start of bringing the atmosphere back? i know it will take more than one game, but its just an idea.

                  Good post Pete

re atmosphere and singing, I know it's been said before but I think it'd be great if all the singers were in the middle of ellerslie rd.. am sure would spread around the ground

good post. have said for ages now the powers that be need to allocate a section of the ground a a 'noisy' section where every1 goes to sing. wuld make a huge difference. surely somebody could bring this up or suggest it at the next meeting

Absolutely BANG ON there Pete. Agree with every word you have written. It was a shame looking over at the P block against Peterborough... I just wish we could have that part of the ground filled up.

The difference it makes (along with being more encouraging towards the players) is enormous. Just look at the attitude of the fans at Cardiff - when nobody expected us to even get a point, then we completely blow them off the pitch.

fair point Pete - but i feel the "noise" will return once fans have got used to thier new surroundings - many have been shifted or due to pricing been forced to shift and most are still getting to know thier new "nieghbours"

Ridiculous Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum ticketing policy prevents this.

                            Shame, as decent idea Pete.

ALi russsell killed of what was left of the atmosphere with the gold silver bronze and the ticket hikes. there is no doubt about this, many people that had been in groups were broken up by these moves as some stayed and others moved.

Fundementally the biggest problem was making the upper loft all gold apart from the corners

now songs started in Q and R dont carry across the loft to the SAR.

its basic its fundemental and it needs reversing. The commercial dept steamed in with their Hearts style blueprint apparently without any consideration or understanding of the stadium and the fanbase and its dynamics. They were told this last year but insisted on carrying it forward to this season through I think sheer bloddymindedness in the face of all the evidence.
its New Era number 8 i tell thee, bring on the fireworks
