  • "Diving McClean's despicable act".

A Martin Samuel's article in the Mail this morning.

"QPR won and so the incident fades into insignificance, but James McClean's dive during Monday night's play-off second leg was one of the most despicable acts of the season. His team,Wigan Athletic,we're leading 1-0 when McClean went through one on one in the first half.He tapped it wide of goalkeeper Rob Green and then threw himself to the ground,as if taken out.Fortunately,Mark Clattenburg, the referee, spotted this and showed him a yellow card.Had McClean succeeded,he would have won a penalty, probably ending the contest at 2-0,and Green would have been sent off. There is no way QPR could have recovered. In those circumstances,a booking hardly seems sufficient.Deceit of such a nefarious nature, with far reaching consequences, could easily be worthy of a red.

Agree with that. Would be refreshing if refs had licence to punish as they see it. IF they feel someone most likely dived, or went down too easy under minimal contact, stick with a yellew, ie if there's any slight hint of doubt but you go with your gut feeling. But as in McLean's case when you can see without doubt there is no contact whatsoever, send the ******s off.

If there's a chance of a red players will soon think twice about diving. As it stands the potential gain makes it worth the risk to them, and even if they get a yellow, it's almost like taking a card for the team, like if a midfielder deliberately stops a counter by fouling knowing they'll get a card.

The ONLY way to stop cheating is by a straight red or the prospect of retrospective punishment.......until the authorities decide to deal with it, we won't care if a QPR player does it and complain furiously it an opposition player does it.......

Agree, simple - retro (three game) bans. 80% of diving will be gone within a month.

Don't think we need the Patio Tarmac'd outside HQ mate.

              Buy McArthur instead. Far superior.

                Because he dived against us?
That could rule a lot of potential targets out, and of course none of our players would ever do anything like that to get us promoted....

He has been punished and I think yellow card was enough. If it was Hoilett would you agree on red card?

Def agree with more retro being used.
They use it in rugby all the time - things go on report. A game goes on and then later, the next day, you hear a player is banned for 4 weeks/ 8 weeks etc.

Football seems to have a rule of "well i didn't see it so never mind" or "well at the time i gave a free kick so we can't go back and highten the sanction". if it warrants a ban, then it should get one. Why do we live by some loopholes. no wonder players cheat - if they can get away with it.

if i was told i could get away with robbing a bank i'd do it.

It does seem stupid that had the ref not had as good a view as clattenburg did, he would have gave a pen (i thought he had when he blew the whistle (i think a bit of poo came out) meaning green gets a red and we lose (more than likely).
Yet for trying to cheat your way to victory he just gets a yellow and a smile.
I said after seeing the replay he should be sent off.
Fair doos to the ref for being in the right place, had he been behind play looking through players it could have been very different.

As the rules stand I'm not sure a ref can give a straight red for a dive??? Rules would have to be agreed/changed first, at least I I think.

So a yellow was fine on this occasion/all he could do.

But if the broader/question issue is how to remove it from the game - then retro bans would do the trick nicely.

                          Simple.

Agree with that but it should be changed to give the ref carte blanche to use his own discretion. ie In a "normal" league game a yellow, but in the context of what that game meant to both teams, the ref should be able to show a red if need be. It's all about context.

Good article and spot on! That was a terrible piece of cheating and it could have cost us a shot at the promised land! Like others, I thought it was a penalty and red, when the ref produced the yellow I thought Green was vetting off easy until I saw it from another angle! Credit to Clattenberg for his good positioning and it is a shame the refs can't show red for cheating!
