Contrary to what some people have been saying on these forums, it has been very well publicized in the Korean and Dutch press in the past year, and more so recently, that Park agreed to new terms (the massive pay cut) and a one-year extension in return for TF letting him go on loan to PSV last summer. In recent interviews with the Korean press, Park's father stated (among other things) that Park had agreed to the lowered wages immediately prior to the PSV loan and that the pay cut would remain in effect in the case he returned to QPR to honor his contract.

Based on what Park and his father have said in recent interviews, it seems Park was seriously considering retirement due to his deteriorating knee. Less games are played in the Dutch league, and Park was given special attention and as much rest as possible in between games, to ensure that he was up to playing all or most of 90 minutes each week. In contrast, a return to QPR in the Championship would have meant more games per season, in a much rougher league, and it seemed Park was doubtful of whether he could perform for QPR at the level he did at PSV this season. With that on his mind, he met TF about a week ago, and it seems TF asked Park to return to QPR for his final season, rather than retire this summer, and it seems that Park obliged. We will know for sure tomorrow, as Park is scheduled to give a press conference.

Actually, it was an exclusive interview with Sports Chosun, the sports arm of Chosun Ilbo, Korea's most circulated print newspaper. So no, not a dodgy propaganda site.


Ultimately, the decision is now Park's. He can opt to pay up on whatever penalties or contractual obligations remain and retire immediately, or return to QPR as he (presumably) promised TF last week. At this point, I think he will delay retirement for another season to honor TF's wishes.

I also presume from a marketing perspective park is part of the plan...hes such a big name in korea it makes sense him being with us as long as hes on the renewed contract....not the worst player to have for 10 - 15 mins to shut out a game every now and again.
