PAUL Furlong has been appointed as QPR Under-18s Professional Development Coach.
The R's legend, in charge until the end of the season since Steve Gallen’s switch to the Under-21s, has now been handed the role on a permanent basis.
Furlong – who scored over 50 goals from more than 160 appearances for Rangers between 2002-2007 – will be assisted by ex-Jamaica international Paul Hall.
“It’s where I want to be,” Furlong, who was assistant to Gallen before taking the reins in February, told www.qpr.co.uk.
“Steve brought me in and he was very instrumental in me being at the club. To learn a little bit off him as well was fantastic.”
Furlong – who joined the Academy as Assistant Youth Development Coach in September 2012 – was a fans' favourite during his five-year spell at Loftus Road.
“I’m just pleased QPR have given me the opportunity,” he said.
“Every now and then when we have team meetings I talk to them about QPR, the shirt and the badge they’re playing for. It’s a very special club.”
Furlong has continued where Gallen left off, guiding the young R’s to the Professional Development League Two play-offs.
Despite suffering semi-final defeat at Huddersfield Town, the newly-named Under-18s boss insists there’s plenty of reason for optimism for the future.
“It’s a great team spirit we’ve got within the group,” he added. “We’ve also had a couple of the Under-16s come up to represent the Under-18s so they’ve had a little taster of what's to come.
“They’ve all been a pleasure to work with and I’m really looking forward to next year.”
Meanwhile, Hall arrives as Furlong’s assistant boasting his own wealth of playing experience.
The former Portsmouth and Coventry City striker represented his country at France 1998, starting all three games in Jamaica’s only ever World Cup finals appearance.
