  • 3rd Place Auto Promotion v Playoff

This is not sour grapes as the play off situation is working to our advantage having finished fourth but for me im old fashioned and think the team that finishes third should go up and not one that potentially being sixth and some number of points behind third.

If you finish third then your the third best side in the league and should be promoted on that basis.

Obviously hope we take advantage of the current rule but if we had finished in Derbys position and failed to go up via the play offs I would feel really robbed

Those are the rules of the competition before a season starts and rules that are accepted by clubs. It also prolongs interest in league football as some clubs will be fighting to the end to make the play offs.

The 72 league clubs could always vote to scrap the rules but they don't. No one wants to limit their chances of promotion.
Supporting QPR isn't just about a football team. It's about roots and identity.

If you had to come third to go up, i have no doubt we would of come third. We really took our foot off the pedal last ten game or so. Harry Outs a wiley old git.

Makes things much more interesting. If you're say mid table with 5 games left gives you something to play for if you can nick 6th.

Sort of agree with your sentiments West. Reckon a better way of doing the play offs so as to give 3rd an advantage would be to have 6th play 5th, the winner plays 4 and the winner plays 3rd in the final - thus 3rd only has to win 2 game to be promoted. Not sure it could / would ever be implemented though as the play off process works well as it is, but for conversationally purposes think this is a good alternative for the play offs!
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Season can finish in feburary for a lot of clubs with no play offs. Keeps everyone playing right to the death. The best thing since sliced bread.

I know its the rules guys just saying for me the league position should determine promotion not a lottery at the end of it which in fact has no significance to how you have performed over 46 games

Hopefully were the benefactors this season and the first side to finish 4th and win through the play offs as it has apparently its not been done before

True but why should the team that finishes 3rd on merit be penalised so to keep other teams who were not good enough seasons going??

I dont think it works like that, like i said , i reckon we would of come third of we had too. The third team has come third because of the play offs imho. Would be different if there wasnt any play offs.

Very hard for the championship to compete with the exposure given to the Premiership but a few days in sunny May the Championship takes precedence resulting in the outside world taking notice.
Playoffs give the Championship and other lower leagues some much needed glitter and also for fans a promotion winning playoff especially championship eclipses most other things a fan of a smaller club will ever see in their clubs history.

Playoffs are much better as keeps season alive for most teams much longer which helps retain their competitive need much longer, which helps make the league what is renowned for, ie, anyone can beat anyone.

As for 3rd missing out.... They're not as they get what you get for 3rd place, which is a play off spot. Everyone knows that before the season so no point b1tching at the end. There's 2 auto spots, that's it.
