However, two points:
1. Actually, they did not have to sell, they just chose to because you can't force a player to play and I think that even if you take him to court for breach of contract (if he decides not to play) the most compensation you can get (lawyers please feel free to correct me!) is the value of the contract (i.e. much less than a potential transfer fee). Even if he decided to play under duress, he probably wouldn't try too hard, so best to just get rid, but you don't HAVE to sell.
2. We won't know about the Buy Out clause until it is tested in court. I'm positive it would hold up - if it is in the contract then why on earth wouldn't it?!
