I agree with the sentiment that Rooney isn't world class, he's not. But he's going to be both Man Utd and England's all time top goal scorers - for me, that's a touch better than "average at best".

Anyway I'm sure Rooney won't lose any sleep of Joey Barton's opinion of him
was about to say something similar to this. Rooney had the world at his feet and could've gone on to be something special had he had the right approach to football but nevertheless calling him average is ridiculous.

won't dispute that but same could be said of all of our top players. All are a shadow of themselves when that England shirt goes on

I make you right mate. For some reason its always been like that, look at the likes Le Tissier and Ian Wright. Both fantastic strikers for their clubs, but put an England top on and then the become average.

But with all this said, personally from what I've seen I think our up and coming youth are looking a lot more promising.

Average was meant in context to the England team, not made clear in the original post by myself.

You then say he's not on the same wavelength than Kagawa who's hardly featured, Mata who's been there 5 mins and nothing like his best, RVP who's had a woeful season by recent standards, and even Welbeck who is for the most part useless when it comes to touch, co-ordination and decision making.... yeah great finish the other night Danny!! Which would've been another assist for Rooney, had Welbeck not been useless..... The flipside of "stats don't tell the whole story".
Welbeck was Utd's best player against Bayern, he could have finished that but he's young and playing against the best keeper in the world, it's forgivable. Rooney was their worst aside from Fellaini

Rooney isn't the shining light the media have portrayed him as, he's one of the main reasons Utd have been so shite this season. When he plays as a no. 10 the team suffers. And obviously Kagawa/Mata/VP etc won't play to their potential when he's swanning around doing what he wants. He's out against Newcastle today and Utd are playing the best football I've seen in ages, let's see if anyone in the media mentions this...
