Barton: Rooney is not World Class

Agree with him Rooney or any other English player are no where near the worlds best, but since when has Joey Barton been some kind of football oracle? giving interviews like this like he anything other then a good championship player? Been great for us this season but the guy needs to pipe down. The other week on twitter trying to degrade players like Neymar, Pastore, etc These guys have more talent in their little toes then joey has. Just concentrate on getting QPR promoted Joey and leave the players a million miles better then you alone.

Over the last decade we have had a number of very good players, some over hyped massively, but others had been worthy of their billing. Nobody can dispute the likes of Gerrard, Scholes and Cole were World class. Simply put, were as good as the best in their respective positions. Rooney in patches has been brilliant and would be considered World class at the time but he's lacked the high level of consistency over a sustained period to be in the very top bracket in general.

That said, he can still be brilliant and turn it on, and let's hope he does in the summer. When he burst onto the scene in 2004 he was a revelation, but unfortunately has tamed over time.

Rooney doesn't have the awareness or mentality to be a top CM or no. 10.

Utd would be better off playing Kagawa or Mata behind Persie/Rooney/Welbeck. He doesn't link up play or create chances, which is the role that comes with that position. He is more comfortable passing it out wide and tends to run around like a headless chicken

Similarly England would be better off playing Sturridge/Welbeck as no. 9 with Lalana as no. 10 and Sterling, Walcott etc. on the wings

Rooneys was best when he played on the wing in a front 3 of him/Ronaldo/Tevez. He's got talent but has CLEARLY got complacent and is on the decline. And they're paying him 300k a week!

Agree totally with Robbo. Think Gerrard has been world class for Pool previously. Would be very surprised if he made anybody's current world 11. Hart & Cole maybe however the national side has not had a creative world class player since the unfortunate Gazza IMHO.

A good deal of those assists have been corners, free kicks where he's crossed it in etc. - stats don't always tell the truth! I'm not saying he's shite or has no technique, but if you've seen Utd matches this season he does not link up play well at all! This is reflected in the League 1esque football Utd have been playing so far

The role of a no. 10 is to create chances and serve as the hub of the team. Rooney doesn't do this, he jogs around where he wants (which is why VanP complained about him taking his space) and isn't on the same wavelength as Kagawa/Mata/VanP, or even Welbeck's 1 touch play.

Not sure how you can criticise Rooney in Utd's season when he's been one of if not the only semi shining light among a pile of sh1te served up by Moyes and the team.

You then say he's not on the same wavelength than Kagawa who's hardly featured, Mata who's been there 5 mins and nothing like his best, RVP who's had a woeful season by recent standards, and even Welbeck who is for the most part useless when it comes to touch, co-ordination and decision making.... yeah great finish the other night Danny!! Which would've been another assist for Rooney, had Welbeck not been useless..... The flipside of "stats don't tell the whole story".

I agree with the sentiment that Rooney isn't world class, he's not. But he's going to be both Man Utd and England's all time top goal scorers - for me, that's a touch better than "average at best".

Agree with him being the top scorer for England but I just don't see him as being a world class player now. So I guess you have it about right 'a touch better than average'
