Throughout time Chelsea always had a massive following, remember 70s & 80s loads of fans in west london would term themselves Chelsea even though they hardly went.
RA money transformed them, first two yrs he spent over £220m on players alone. With success came the crowds but the fan base is still fickle, I know a couple of blokes who had st in Jose first phase as they knew they were guaranteed success but went AWOL once he left as they thought Chelsea were more vulnerable, one said to me in the pub he liked going because they always won what's the point of going to see you lose.
Chelsea have always had a funny fanbase, a lot of association but have peaks and troughs in getting the numbers out.
My concern is 40k stadium = big club. Ufortunately or fortunately what way you look at it we are small, we just haven't got thousands and thousands who associate with the club, fans that turn up are IMHO are vast support ..it's not like pubs in london or wherever are crammed with fans not at the game.
Once you start constructing a 40k stadium you need to be at looking at a club the size of a Everton, Villa sized team but we are more Huddersfield, Watford in size.
If the plan is the regeneration will bring in the numbers, I'm not sure, as a football club isn't a supermarket or cinema.
I would be more confident if TF commenced a mass spending spree on par with Roman and then said we are too small, let's move to a 40k stadium after we would mid table in the premiership and having a great FA cup run in TFs first season.
The reality though is our transfer policy was a joke and whose to say the new build isn't going to take the same route.
