Charlie Austin is a decent striker at this level, but he's nothing special. Andy Thompson scored 20+ goals for us in 2001 - when did you last think about him? But I bet those of you who are old enough to remember Wegerle or Currie have lots of good memories.

Austin or Adel: who are you going to tell your grandchildren about?

    Are you serious?

You would rather we spent season after season doing nutmegs, shoulder dummies than winning??

Its all very good reminiscing about player's in the top flight, but why would you want to not be moving forward and reminisce about player's in the 2nd division when the club's just free falling, because thats what will happen if we just bring in show boaters.

Which one are you most likely to be talking about...

"Did any one see that great shoulder dummy Adel done on the Mansfield defender at the One Call Stadium"

    OR

"That was a great goal Austin scored against Joe Hart at the Etihad stadium to take us above spurs in the premiership"

....I know which one I'd rather be telling my grandkids.

Yes but that was then... in the past. When are people going to start forgetting about Adel.

This Morrison could be the answer to help you move on.

Probably not for a long time mate. As much as you like to play it down, he was a major factor in a season to remember where the R's went up into the top flight for the first time in 15 years. That season will never be forgotton.

This whole thread is an austin vs adel poll, you can't seriously give me grief for mentioning adel here.

Oh and on the 'scoring against City to go above Spurs' point, Adel is clearly the more likely of the two to end up as a CL regular. I love Austin, but he surely won't ever get above mediocre premier league level. Just look at the gap in class between him and Remy.

Even this part is nonsense. Even aside from the fact you've put down Adel (he's currently pulling off said nutmegs at the San Siro) and bigged up Austin (will he ever get to that CL level? doubt it) to try and prove the point...

League position isn't everything. I bet Gareth Ainsworth's two goals vs Rushden & Diamonds are getting spoken about a lot more than, say, whoever scored when we were briefly 11th or so in the PL. Dennis Bailey only ever scored 10 goals for us, but three of them are still famous now. You seriously think your grandkids are going to give two shets if we were once above Spurs? We were ahead of them in the 90s, and we will be again some day. They'll want to hear about epic goals, great tricks, fun characters, victories against the odds.

Football is all about the glory, and that's what you'll remember.

I've never played it down mate. He was fantastic for us and that whole promotion season was 1 of the best experiences in my life, and if I remember rightly he got a lot of interest from premiership clubs... BUT that was then and this is now, its time to move on.

Exactly, its about the glory... winning!

Mate spurs was just an example. Your saying we were above them in the 90s and we will again some day, that is true but only because we're score goals and win games not because we've got some fancy tart doing kicky ups on the half way line and doing nutmegs.

Im not giving you grief about mentioning Adel, like you said it an Adel v Austin thread, but your coming across as someone who would rather watch tricks than win games.

Your honour I give you Adel the last 2 1/2 years a mediocre premier league player

it is strange how some are so impressed by britains got talent style tricks over effective football

~40 goals and assists last time he was in this league; one of the most creative players in the Premier League last season (7th in chances created). Those tricks *are* effective.

It's only boring because so many WATRB types completely ignore stuff like facts and what actually happened.

He is a lovely footballer and worth the ticket admission on his own at times, BUT he didnt want to play in the championship ever again, and it transpires he was correct to say and do this for himself, as where he is plying his trade now proves. The argument is mental, as we had no say in him ever playing for us. No say whatsoever.
