  • Refections on Burnley

Best game of the season for action, probably a fair result.
442 does seem to produce more open games for us than 451
We dominated the first 10 mins of each half and both Hill & Krancjar could have nicked it at the end.
The average age of our starting XI was noted beforehand - Only 3 players under 30 ! Also we started with too many square pegs in round holes.

Green - couldn't blame him for any goal but didn't make any 'kept us init' saves like in previous & recent games.

Onouha - wasn't great at RB before and struggled at times yesterday, their 2nd goal for example, caught in no mans land. Better at CB IMO. I wonder if Hughes is better suited at RB with Ned covering both from the bench ?
BAE - fine 1st half, but 3 big errors in the 2nd, the first costing a goal, meant his worst performance for us.
Dunne - took his goal really well.
Hill - no nonsense as ever, but our 2 ageing CB's were always going to have a tough day against the best front 2 in the division. Ings & Vokes scoring 3 between them proves that & I wonder if Ned's pace at CB would have countered them better ?

Traore - didn't do enough for me to justify left mid, I hoped for more crosses.
Krancjar - great at taking the ball and getting past his marker and the first challenge, but the next bit sometimes flatters to deceive. Not suited to CM for me. Got lost in 2nd half for the 10 minutes when we completely lost midfield & Burnley scored twice.
Barton - great game, one of his best, my MotM considering he was often covering for Nico as well.
Phillips - I hope it's not serious or a lengthy lay off.
Hoilett - did ok considering not on his favoured left side. Didn't do enough defensively to help Ned, but got plenty of the ball 2nd half. He certainly worried them, with 3 players around him at times. But too many of his passes & crosses hit the defender. The only time he got past them, he got lucky with the ball bouncing kindly for him - admittedly we scored but considering how many times he received the ball, his end result concerns me.

AJ - did ok, runs around alot, but again, sometimes flatters to deceive. I can see him coming off the bench more than starting.
Doyle - very good debut, good run & header for his goal and won plenty in the air for someone his height against typically big strong northern CB's. Much more of the same please and Charlie's loss might not be so painful.
Maiga - too on long enough to judge, but looked lively. Easy goal, tried another shot but 2 crosses were poor. Can see him starting up front with Doyle if we go 442 again.

On the whole a game we could have won but after gifting them them 2 goals, getting a point was essential.
