Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
And many more mistakes
Something is happening there. In the last 5 games 9 goals conceded (almost 2 a game) for the first 25 games 15 conceded.
The question is what is happening:
Have tactics changed so they are not protected as they used to - is it 4-2-2?
The defenders are on the older side - is age starting to have an effect - should they have been rested?
Goalkeeper starting to make errors?
Something else?
We all know that we are not going to win any matches conceding 2 a match.
Simpson not being there, not having a quality striker to defend from the front like Chaz and too many of these overpaid, overrated ******s not putting in a shift would be my guess
For me very basic. Total lack of pace and drive. You simply cannot have three out of four defenders into their thirties in the modern game. We were absolutely destroyed for pace yesterday and have generally been looking shaky of late. I actually felt sorry for Clint. He was absolutely flinging himself about as if his life depended on it but just couldn't keep up. Dunne and Hughes good solid pros but again time has caught up.
We should without doubt start with Ned in central defence and one of Clint/Dunne alongside him. There is merit in having experience in the heart of things but needs to be supported by youth. To have someone of his quality on the bench at this level is ridiculous. RB is more problematic. We simply have no adequate cover. Hughes has no pace and Ned is make shift at best. in this type of case a lot of teams would bring in a youngster. We have Harriman who is out on loan and apparently they are very impressed with him. That said lets not pretend we know much about the kid but it does frustrate me we never play any youngsters. What's the point of having them?
Reading are known for their pace throughout and we played Barton and Niko in the centre of midfield in front of an elderly defence!
Never been an 'Arry fan and now see him as inept. You don't need to be a football genius to work out yesterday's selection was a complete mismatch. As long as he keeps making stupid selection decisions as he has for a while now we will ship goals and be vulnerable.
3 game in 16 days - that is not a lot for professional footballers
Bur what does Harry say
Reading were bright, they had more ENERGY than we did and I’ve got no complaints.
Same problem as we have had all season, lack of pace at the back and sitting too deep. With a three man midfield we not only provide a lot more protection to the back four we also (as the stats will tell you) mean we keep the ball for long periods, even though we don't do much with it. As a result teams have less opportunities to attack us so less pressure on the back four.
There was never any need to change the formation just play the right players in the right positions, 4-2-3-1. Play two sitters in midfield with one striker, someone like Kranjear or Morrison in behind and two out and out wide players. Still need to replace one of Hill and Dunne with Onhura to provide pace. All very well but Redknapp loves the players he knows and historically very stubborn so don't hold your breath.
