  • Carlton Cole

Couple of references to him in the papers this morning, linking him with us. Harry even quoted as saying something like "I have to show respect because he is still a West Ham player." In Harry language that means "we have tapped him up, we have arranged for the money to be paid via a springer spaniel in Monaco and he should be free to start against Everton."

What do fans think? I know no one will be doing cartwheels of excitement but my take is that this is a realistic signing to help get us promoted and no more. From memory he has a decent strike rate in this division and has now more or less proved his fitness. Yes I too would much prefer Long, Defoe or Jelavic but lets be realistic - we are in the Championship. When we were in the Prem we would occasionally see Championship fans getting over-excited about the prospect of them signing some major star, and we just laughed - because we realised it was a pipe dream. When its our own club we forget that and think everyone is desperate to play for the Hoops. They just aren't. Even Hull is a better prospect for Long because its six more months in the Prem, and he knows that if Hull go down some other low-ranking Prem club will come in for him.

As for Rhodes, just can't see Tony splashing ten million quid - he has had his fingers burned already and isn't going to spend that (imo of course) on a player who has never proved himself in the Prem.

Not saying any of this to be negative. I just fear there are going to be a lot of unhappy bunnies on here come the end of Jan. For some fans no one is ever good enough - loads were even turning their noses up at Adeybyour when he was linked - now he he has scored something like four in five games, two against Man U, and is first choice for Spurs! Realism needed folks.

Did well for west ham in the championship and has bagged a few goals in his short term deal with them so far this season.
Personally I think alongside austin he would do a job, sign him up. But we would need to bring another in to, not sure how injury prone cole is.

He simply doesnt score enough for me. I think his general play and abiity to hold the ball up would be a positive for us, but seeing as our main problem seems to be scoring goals, i dont think he is the answer.

I wouldnt go for him, but at the same time, wouldnt be distraught as no doubt some people would if we did get him. For what he offers, id prefer crouch.

West Ham don't have many options at the moment and won't let him go.

I would rather we went for someone that wasn't a stop gap. If we brought in Cole...we wouldn't want him in the Prem.

Is not a signing that would send shock waves through the division but would rather us sign him than one of our promotion rivals.

Could do a job alongside Austin and as a free signing it kind of makes sense

I think you are right about TF not wanting to spend a lot of money. I think at this stage the club will want to secure the services of an experienced player to help us get promotion but only on a short-term deal. Once we are in the EPL, we will be a far more attractive proposition for good, long-term, younger talent and we will be able to afford them more easily.

I am prepared to leave it up to the club to do what they can and will give anyone who comes in a good chance to prove themselves. That includes Carlton Cole.

                Not his biggest fan
                Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
                And many more mistakes

LES FERDINAND, IT'S TIME TO GO

From 2006 - 2013 he played 206 games for west ham and only scored 47, that's focking shocking for a strike.

IF we bring in another striker HR will obviously either play two up front and I cant see Cole making a great difference there.
                  OR
carry on playing one up front, take the pressure of Austin and swap between strikers and if that's the case IMHO Cole is not the right player.

They are reportedly chasing Ricky Lambert aren't they? As always, it will be a giant jigsaw puzzle probably only completed on the final day.

Mate, if you read my post I'm not making out he is Messi. I'm no great fan of his at all. I simply ask the question: if he isn't good enough, then who REALISTICALLY would you sign considering that Rhodes is almost certainly too expensive, Wells is injured, etc etc?

would rather go for nakhi wells. young and hungray with a bag full of goals.

yes its a gamble but we spent 5mil on austin and look at him.

cole is just after one big payday.

speaking of which, according to the transfer window bible, nakhi well's agent has said he will decide next week weather nakhi well's will join either leeds or us.

                            here is hoping

We don't take enough gambles on young players. We played it safe with experience over the last couple of seasons and look what it did for us.
