The one that leally gets my goat is when your team is losing with time running out and the full back knocks the ball
out for a throw in, when they could kick the ball down the line.

I suppose if your team is made up of short asses who couldnt win a header if you gave em a step ladder then launching it has less appeal cos you are just giving the ball straight back to the oppostiion. If you got two fantastic wingers then feeding the FB who can then feed the winger who can then carry the ball forward and either cross or shoot makes a lot of sense. So if the club buys two fantastic wingers that will work well

Why do we always kick the ball away to the opposition from the second touch when we kick off game?

Instinct. Keepers are usually coached to build from the back. If you watch a full back that's quite narrow when the keeper has the ball, a good one will normally roll out wide giving the keeper an outlet.
Supporting QPR isn't just about a football team. It's about roots and identity.

they roll it out because the full back is normally at least 20 yards further up the pitch, they can then put a long ball in with moe accruacy.

Quite basic really, i would have thought with all the managers on this board someone could figure that out

Because it keeps possession, rather than a long aimless punt upfield for 2 hungry 6ft 4 centre halves to win the header and get possession for the defending team.
Im the opposite, why pump an aimless ball and lose possession without the ball you cannot score.

With you Jeff. 9 times outta 10 a lump upfield will come right back at ya.

Think OP was referring to a latter stage of a match when the team is down rather than normal play.
88minutes on the clock your teams 1 nil down why doesn't the GK just boot it up.
My mates son has signed a contract with a professional club as GK and from an early stage in their career GKs are being taught the more continental approach of rolling out to full backs, long kicks our are frowned on.
Growing up playing in the 70s and 80s your keeper would only roll it out if he was injured, how times have changed.

Its about keeping possession of the ball and keeping the pressure on the opposition, even in the dying seconds a long lump up field more often than not ( even if flicked on by your striker ) is easily dealt with , what teams (defenders) dont want is pace running at them from wide areas, long hoofs can just be repelled 9 times out of 10.

Well Leicester certainly gained from a long punt down the field
