  • 4-4-2 or 4-5-1

Debatable. Not controlled the last two games playing it. Can see why Harry loves it looked poor today. Thought hoilett was poor but should never have took Phillips off for o'neil lacked pace. Roll on next week

It kind of proves why Harry has stuck with 4-5-1 for so long. 4-4-2 works best when you maintain good possession in midfield which we didn't do today. If Kranjcar and Benayoun were introduced it may prove more effective.

“People always think if you have two up front you’re going to create more chances but it doesn't always work that way,” Redknapp said. “When teams come here they’re not just going to open up."

Asked if Wednesday’s match had led to a rethink, Redknapp said:

“Not really. We haven’t lost a game at home playing with one up front either. You can lose control of a game sometimes by playing with two up. It was a good result the other night, but certainly playing with one up front has been very successful for us this year.

In that game it [two up front] worked for us, yes, but we won games before that so there was nothing wrong with the system before the other night. There are very few [successful] teams in the world now that play with two up front. Watch the World Cup and I doubt you’ll see teams playing with two strikers.

We’ll look at each game and take it as it comes. It’ll be horses for courses. In some games we’ll play with the three [in midfield] to thicken us up and at other times we’ll stick two up front and play differently.”

I think we need to keep the opposition guessing in terms of our formation - we were getting a little too predictable with 4 5 1 but now Johnson is fit, 2 wingers available and Yossi signing on - we should mix it up

Well done Stanley. As he said there likes to control games with 5 in middle and restrict teams possession/chances. As men mentioned dont mind a mixture keep teams guessing as long as we get it RIGHT ha

Well they tried hard in that first hour and by picking 442 with two strikers and two wingers the manager couldn't have gone more attacking and open which is what some were calling on him to do. But no goals from it in the first hour and it didn't really look like getting them either despite the selection.

I thought there was a clear improvement after the subs and that while 5 in the middle is still a work in progress it is the one to work on as the default setup.
Be interesting to see what the new signing will bring to the party.

I know it will never happen, but wouldnt it by nice for us to once in our lives get a debutant who scores and them goes on a five or six game scoring run that gets talked about in all the papers. See it so much with other clubs, never with us. Come on benny, change that habit for us.

Not at all sure if the formation has anything to do with it.

Think the main problems are lack of direct attacking intent and generally very poor quality of passing. You can't tell me that playing 4-5-1 enables a player to make a 10 yard pass properly, but that 4-4-2 hinders it.

We simply need to move the ball much quicker than we do, with far more accuracy. Nothing that a bit more concentration wouldn't sort out.

It's all very well Krancjar appearing to look comfortable on the ball, but he's no use at all putting in the performances he has done of late. Same with O'Neil.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to the players doing what is asked of them by the management. Either they are not doing as they are asked, or they are being asked to do the wrong things. Our performances have been pretty mediocre all season in fairness. A mixture of very laboured and slow build up play, poor decision making, sloppy passing and some of the worst shooting we've ever seen.

The fact that we are still up there says a lot about this league and the lack of overall consistency.

I understand that Harry is trying to make us hard to beat and appreciate that things could be a lot worse, but for crying out loud, there needs to be more from us than we are currently seeing.

With the midfielder's and defenders we have you can see why HR plays 4.5.1, we're a very solid team and very hard to break down. I can't think of a game this season where the opposition have dominated highly in possession, if at all.

But if we want goals (which I think is crucial this season as I think goal difference is going to be vital come the end of the season) we have to go 4.4.2 as 4.5.1 has proven to get us very few goals.

Because HR very much believes in 4.5.1 it does make me wonder if that's the only formation we practice in training, which would explain why we don't look completely comfortable playing 4.4.2.....

Goal difference will mean absolutely nothing come the end of the season. Id have any bet on it. Its far to long a season, and no promotion has ever been settled on gd before has it. Dont know why you think that. Its points that matter, not gd. There is no way the season will stay like this with two at the top with the exact same points. Far too manyngames and points to be won lost for that to happen.

I just think this is the tightest this division has arguably ever been.
Trust me I would love you to be right, I suppose we'll soon find out
