  • Guardian article : Forgotten Story of.... Alec Stock

Simon Burnton: The tale of the QPR manager who took the club to two promotions and what remains their only major trophy, before he was sacked and left out in the cold

Good read, and a reminder that we have always been a bit of a basketcase

That's a shameful read.....poor bloke. The club behaved terribly towards him in the late 90s, he's someone we should have a statue of outside the ground

Agree 100% with that, Dave. A statue to the great man outside Loftus Rd is long overdue.

Interesting article, thanks. It is indeed shameful that the club treated Alec that way.

You read the Guardian? Would never have guessed that...

Shameful story really - Jim did a lot for our club and is considered a fantastic chairman because he dragged QPR up from the bottom but if he been less successful them I'm sure more of these stories would have been known.

No, not one for papers tbf.

Got this one via another QPR site tbf, thought it would get more interest tbh

Ring any bells - last para of the article:
When Gregory bought the club in 1964 it was in the Third Division, financially imperilled and with a small and ramshackle stadium. When he left it was in the First Division, financially secure and with a totally renovated ground.

As a youngster I used to work at Rangers selling programmes (6p for first team matches and 2p for the reserve games which only gave you the teams on one sheet of A4) and generally helping out in the office with Ron Phillips. My overriding memory of Alec Stock was of him wandering around the empty ground deep in thought on non match days preparing for the next game. A true gentleman if ever there was one who will never be forgotten for what he did for the club. Jim Gregory, however, will always be revered for his considerable part (although clearly utterly ruthless) in dragging The R's up from the depths to the fine club we are today. So God Bless them both for two very different reasons and both always in my thoughts whenever talking about the good old days.

Interesting article, thanks for posting, was not aware how badly he was treated. Warnock would no doubt feel similarly let down, but this was worse. Particularly poor that we didn't want to help with a testimonial and so on. I always thought of "Chairman Jim" as a lovable rogue, had not realised he was quite so ruthless.
