      although ive been going to

although ive been going to rangers since 54 i was only four years old when i started so i cant remember to much about rangers reallybut the one thing i can remeber was all the rangers fans putting abuse on bedford for missing sitters,so the only picture i can conjure up was that briian was as hard as nails and lethal in the air to the level of he was possibly the greatest header of a ball of all time

DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVE BEDFFORD SO MUCH I WOULD LIKE TO ORGANISE A TESTIMONIAL FOR HIM AND MARK LAZARUS

BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW LAZZER WAS THE GOLDEN BOY OPF LOFTUS ROAD

but do you agree with my description of bedford as not the most skillfull of players but as hard as nails and lethal in the air,ive never met anybody who has said that bedford had any dribbleing skills so i can only assume he didnt take men on he just got on the end of many wingers crosses and was lethal in the air

Your final paragraph sums him up exactly.A proper old fashioned centre forward a bit like the Third division's answer to Bobby Smith of Spurs.

          in

in 1982 i accidently run into brian bedfors i was in the qpr supporters shop and i shouted out

CLIVE ALLEN IS THE NEW BRIAN BEDFORD

the whole shop which was full of supporters went quiet, and i bald headed man standing behind me looked to the floor with a very red embarressed face

he wasnt the ginger haired battle scared man that i rememberd but i knew buy the look on everyones face and the extreme quietness that this was the great man

i asked how good were you and he replied rather modestly

I WASNT BLESSED WITH THE SHOOTING SKILLS OF CLIVE ALLEN ,BUT TGHE GOALMOUTH WAS MY DOMAIN,I HAD ARIEL SUPREMACY,AND THE CAPABILLITY TO PUT THAT BALL IN THE AIR,MY JOB WAS TO SCORE I DIDNT TAKE MUCH PART IN THE BUILD UP PLAY,BUT IF I GOT ON THE END OF THE BALL
IT WENT INTO THE NET,AND IF THE GOALIE GOT IN THE WAY HE ALSO WENT INTO THE NET,AND IF THE CENTERHALF NEEDED A BROKEN NOSE HE GOT ONE

he spoke very quietly and intellegaintly but after the way he summed up his career i didnt know what else to say, dont forget i did feel a bit embarresed about the way i had shouted out his name not knowing he was behind me

Gee, did teams really only play with 2 defenders in those days? Right-half, centre-half and left-half used to mean midfielders right?

Also, have you tried talking to someone at the club about your issue with the person in front of you? If not I could speak to a couple of my contacts there on your behalf if you like?

Thanks Stan,I'll see how things go with the bloke in front, any more problems,I'll contact the club and/or take up one of the kind offers I've had including yours.I might even warn the bloke of the support I've got and the fact its been discussed on our forum in the hope this keeps him quiet.I've never known anything quite like it in the 62 years I've been a supporter. As far as the formation all those years ago,we never had such thing as a back 4 in those days, and as far as the forward line was concerned it was 5 up front. The 2 half backs were defensive mid-fielders to a certain extent.

                  Stanley,

When the team was set out on the back of a programme, it would look something like this:

                  ...........................................Goalkee per..........................................

                  ........Right Back.............................................. ...............Left Back.......

                  Right Half...............................Centre Half................................Left Half

                  .......................Inside Right..........................Inside Left.........................

                  Outside Right.......................Centre Forward..........................Outside Left

Sorry if that sounds condescending. Obviously not meant to be.

Thanks guys, very interesting and I didn't know all that.

                    I suppose the centre-half would also operate as a sweeper at times....similar to a modern-day 3-4-3 formation?

If I remember rightly, the half backs job was to be the throw in takers as well, on their particular side, right or left. No other player tended to take throw ins.

We'll done Brighton, that's exactly the format.I had to dash off and collect my granddaughter shortly after my last post to Stanley76 and didn't explain myself very we'll and am not the greatest tactician myself despite the number of years I've been following the R's.I wonder how a team playing the old system would fare against another playing any of the current formats.Interesting.

Correct, and the two wingers invariably took the corners.

jim langley was an amazing player

jim lamgley was an amazing player he had started out at leeds as a winger,so he was known as one of the best over lapping fall backs in the country

he also had an amazing gift as penalty taker

and he was also a long throw expert, but the best long throw in geezer of all time was ian hutchinson of chelsea his throw ins were like corners
