  • I would suggest some on here need to go on even a basic coaching course as there is a clear lack of understanding of how football is played.

Possession is kept to create space by drawing the opposition onto the ball and then exploiting the space they leave behind, retention of the ball and good movement will open up any team, however organised.

      Exactly right.
Supporting QPR isn't just about a football team. It's about roots and identity.

it took a further two decades before english football began to appreciate this, via barcelona.

I think Carroll has been pretty good, not spectacular, but the comments criticising him for not playing hollywood balls are pretty depressing. you guys wonder why england underperform at international level and can't seem to string two passes together? it's because of this attitude.

Both these posts are spot on and very well expressed. Some need to take note IMO.

          • Watched Carroll closely yesterday and apart from a 15 minute period in the first half his ball retention was superb, as well as making 3 very good last ditch tackles. Im glad HR stuck with him and took off Faurlin, as whilst Faurlin had a decent game his pace is an issue. Thought Carroll had a very good game overall and he will get better and better over the season IMO.

            • He was a lot better yesterday, first signs of the hype we have heard about. Still not totally convinced tho.

football is best played by scoring one more than the opposition

I agree but have to admit at first i wasn't a fan of the tippy tappy slow build up type game but as most experts will say you don't concede if you starve your opponents of possession. Maybe it is the way forward you don't see as many teams these days playing the high tempo pressing game its all about possession and counter attacking.

Well if you don't see how keeping the ball to create space opens up opportunities to score then nothing I will say will change your mind.

Although any team in the world will find it hard when they don't have the ball!

                        ********.

Football is played by Ron Abbott booting the ball as far upfield as possible for Fat Bob Taylor to knock down to a poacher extraordinaire a la Peter Eastoe with the second ball being won by Brian Williams.

                        • a good period of ball chasing knackers the opposition

indeed this is partly correct but its also important to keep possession in the right areas of the pitch as knocking it around the back four, unless you are leading and trying to see the game out, does not open up the opposition as they can just sit back with people behind the ball. If keeping possession around the half way line and the defence was the simple answer we would not have slapped Swansea twice at home when they were playing the tippy tappy

Agree with you in general, a possession style is a good default, but you can overstate it.
Arsenal are excellent at keeping possession of the ball and dont always open teams up and score - not won a trophy in 10 years even though Wenger is a smart contintal type who knows his tactics and has good players who keep and pass and use the ball. Inter beat Barca in the CL semi despite having less of the ball. It is easier to stop than it is to create. How many times have you heard players talk about training games defence vs attack and how the strikers could not score.
Sometimes ovestating stuff is good, it allow you to make headway, but you can have too much of a good thing too.

                              • Fella in the pub said last night no point doing 30 passes to not go anywhere or score. I said yea what we should do then is do 5-6 passes then give it back to them. Would that be better?

Keeping possession not only instills & breeds confidence in your own team but it mentally & not forgetting physically drains the other team who are chasing shadows. Yes we'd all like an end product but we're still a work in progress & people are moaning about us retaining the ball!!!
