  • Gary O'Neill

The bloke is the epitome of what we lacked last season. Solid, dependable, intelligent simple play and works his socks off for the team.

    Top signing.

    Yep. Brilliant addition.

He has been great, but I do think we are in a bit of a catch 22 like we were the last time we went up. I mean the likes of O'Neil and Henry have been superb, but are they along with the likes of hill and dunne, good enough for the premiership?
Will they be given the chance to show if they are or not or will the core of the team be ripped out again with expensive signings like last time?

It's a tough one. Ideally we're sitting pretty in January and Harry can start to prepare for the prem then by adding some quality.

I think O'Neil and Dunne are plenty good enough for the prem. It was more their injury record that stopped them getting snapped up rather than their latent talent.

As for Henry - he will be good back-up when things get physical...... or when we inevitably have to park the bus.

I think Clint will retire after this season.

Agree with the OP. I had him as my MOM on Saturday. I thought the whole team was great tbf but I like the way O'Neil goes about his game. He won't really do anything spectacular but he is very good at what he does and he has been very dependable up to now.

I think Harry knows the types of players required for the job at hand in this division hence the players he's brought in. Dunne, Hill, O'Neil and Henry I think will all tell you themselves that they might find their chances limited next season if we are to get promoted. All are not on long contracts too which I think also reinforces that and I don't think any of them as fools either with regards to their age and performance levels Vs. what's required in the Premiership. The difference thou with all those players is that none of them will shirk their responsibilities and will all have the mentality that they'll fight for their place next season should we go up. Harry I'm sure too will have different opinions for his squad should we go up. He'll probably want 4 or 5 big signings rather than 15 average mercenaries. There is still a long, long way to go yet so I'd rather leave all that speculation until May if we were in the same or similar position when the time comes.

To simply say they are all good enough for the Premiership is a little naive. It would all depend on what quality comes into the squad if when get promoted. There's a massive gulf between the Premiership and Championship so I wouldn't get too carried away assuming because we are playing well and that we are top at the minute that it's safe to say our current players are good enough for the Premiership. We have a great of players with vast experience at the top level, but who are also coming to the end of their careers. There will be times this season Dunne and Hill get murdered for pace and if they are to get away with it, it will be in this division, but that won't happen in the Premiership. E.g. Vs. Bolton - When Beckford skinned Dunne and left him for dead 99% of the time in the Premiership that was 1-0. Carroll got away with it time and time again on Saturday but those mistakes = goals. Sorry to put a downer on all this excitement but it's important not to get too carried away assuming we've cracked it compared to last seasons squad and that we're now good enough for the Premiership. We've still got to get there first!

Think we would be near bottom again with that team in the league above, sad to say it.
As we have seen before, in the premiership, the difference is huge, probably bigger than its ever been between the first and second divisions.

Exactly my point but in only 2 lines of text

Very easy for some on here to get swept away with the moment. We're at least 5 good 1st players away from being a decent Premiership squad.

O'Neil is as fit as a butcher's dog - the guy covers so many miles in every game and has ability as well

When Norwich and Swansea came up, they made very few changes the first year and survived ok. When we came up the first year we made a few changes, struggled and managed to survive. Last season we made loads of changes and look what happened?

Obviously if we go up, we will need to make changes, but if we have the nucleus of a good team, that might not be too many. I'm not sure what is going to happen to the players who are out on loan.

Also if we go up we will be able to attract players, especially if Harry stays as manager.

Exactly we did better with a load of championship players playing their socks off and caring about the club than with a team of big name mercenaries doing enough to pick up a fat cheque.

Chaps, there is a long way to go yet... talking of promotion is rather premature given we've absolutely robbed a couple of teams (Yeovil & Brum spring to mind).

We have a serious lack of strikers and not much cover at the back... midfield we have awesome strength but to talk like we're already preparing for the premiership is a little daft !!

I think we have a great team spirit and Harry has brought players in that will work their socks off but I agree that we need to calm down. I actually think oneill is limited as a footballer. He has some good traits but certainly isn't premier material. I think Austin has good potential but still has a long way to go and when I hear his name in the same sentence as sir les ferdinand I start thinking that w12 could merit a bed in 1 flew over a cuckoos nest. I have allot of time for his posts and he was spot on with regards to Carroll a point I also got slaughtered for making but I think even good posters can lose the plot on this fictional forum
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!
