  • Barton's corners & free kicks

Again tonight at least 7-8 quality balls literally hitting the penalty spot & back post & how many did we win 1-2? Shocking. For the first time in about 3 seasons we've got someone delivering quality consistent balls into the box & no ones ever there. Annoying.

Charlie Austin works himself into the ground & is doing an unforgiving job up front at the moment but he needs someone with him so he can concentrate being in the box for these good deliverers not chasing shadows & back tracking all night, not to mention getting no service for the third game running.

I thought he put 'some' good ones in, but not that many.
I recall a couple not beating the 1st defender and his final effort in the last minute was appallingly overhit. 4 yards over the bar. He gave away possession a good few times from midfield today, although not as bad as Saturday when his pass completion percentage must have been single figures.

But he did OK and 1 free kick produced a very fine save.
And he shouldn't have been booked. Ref was very happy to get his name I think.

Barton's set pieces compared to Adel's are different gravy.
And i'm a huge fan of the mercurial Moroccan.

I started thread other day praising Bartons set pieces but thought he was a bit off radar with them yesterday. Smashing free kick that the keeper saved but more were over hit last night then on the money from what I can recall

          I'm with you 76.

Don't get me wrong I think Barton was very good (again) last night overall and I'm not knocking his performance, but looking through some threads this morning it appears he can do no wrong in some people's eyes. Despite playing well overall, he lost the ball in some silly places a fair few times and some of his deliveries (as you say) failed to beat the first man and a couple were well overhit (cue the "farking useless" chants from Brighton). Those few aside, though, he did put a few peaches in the box that were wasted as nobody connected with em, barring Austin's bullet header in the first half. Still, all in all, deliveries are far better than what we were getting last season that's for sure!!
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

The great surprise for me this season, has been the quality of Barton's passing and dead ball delivery...

Consistent and at times, Beckham esq

Thought he was one of our best last night of not the best. Did quite a bit in defence too. The occasions where he lost possession were down to the fact that he had to accept passes in a situation where he was under some real pressure. The last free kick was utterly woeful though

I agree, I can't believe what some expletive are saying. He general play was very good and he broke up the Brighton possession well but apart from two free kicks which he was unlucky with his general passing and trying to spray 40 yard passes around was dreadful. It's about time people watched the game back a looked a little closer at him and I'm not saying he had a bad game coz his general play was good but come on he gives the ball away far to much and for somebody of his experience a lot of the time can't even beat the first man.

For breaking up play and simple 5 yard passes Barton is fine........as soon as he tries to spray 40 yard cross field balls......forget it!

I remember 1 beauty last night in the second half to Matty Philips but the rest got us nowhere. There is almost a desperation by some of our fans for him to be seen as brilliant......

Was impressed with his temperament after the booking......That could well have sent the old Joey into meltdown.

while i tend to agree, theres equally as many of our fans that like to down him. he could score and theyd still find something to moan about

Thing is, compared to last season, we look like we can score from set pieces.....

But down to the woodwork and a good save we haven't yet though.
