most rangers supporting families, such as mine, have moved away from area and cost of travel today is very expensive. I have supported rangers since 1953 and travel up from Littlehampton where I now live

When we used to average 25,000 crowds in the 70's it does make you wonder how/where we've lost an average of 10,000 hardcore support...

Is it mainly due to fans like the OP who have moved out of the area?...Or which other factors?...

i think a stickie on this forum with a car share from different areas would be a good option what do people think ? you can set your terms of journey ie what time you set off and share of fuel costs
Dyslexic so please don't feel the need to correct my spelling mistakes as I really don't give a **** and before you say use spell checker if it is spelt right / wright but not in context spell check is useless

Its a good question. Were we getting 25,000 in the second tier though or only when we were in the old first division? We wd average 25,000 plus even now I think if we were in the Prem and had the facilities/ capacity.

I'm not so sure. The last 2 seasons we've been in the prem we weren't even selling out our 18,000 capacity for some games. We've lost 10k of hardcore support since the mid-70s when in the old 1st division. I don't think they were much lower prior to that in the 2nd division but it was before my time so cant say for sure. Gregory building the SAR stand obviously made a big difference.

I would hazard a guess and say in the early 70's 95% of our support lived within a 5 mile radius, now I'd be surprised if that was 25%. Reason our midweek games do not get the crowds like they used to
I must away now, I can no longer tarry

Winning the cup at Wembley in '67; winning promotion to the top-flight in '73 all would have boosted it.

I tend to agree...which begs the question what more could the club be doing now to attract more local support in the same way Fulham have successfully done in recent years?...

what is a realistic price ? football clubs compare there prices to pop concerts and theatre in London now ,which usually start at £30

Why's that? We're no closer to Fulham, Brentford and Chelsea than we've been before. Granted Fulham and Chelsea's success in recent years has no doubt lost us potential younger fans, but saying that how much have the club actually done on the local level to address the issue (like Fulham have with all their local advertising) especially the last two years when in the prem?

                        I'm sure that's a factor.

Pop concerts, theatre etc isn't as regular an expense as supporting your local football club.

Perhaps the German model is the way forward...

i think you answered the question ,Fulham have picked up most floating support,Brentford are always advertising just to stop losing support .The only way we will grow our fanbase[new fans] is with a good run of success over a few years

Football used to be comparable in price to going to the cinema . Maybe safe standing ,would bring the prices back down ( saying that i bought tickets for the Bournmouth match for £18 each in the paddock ,cant argue with that )

Germany seem to have the right balance, although granted their stadiums are a lot larger. One of the biggest concerns is the money going to players and agents and not filtering down the leagues and more importantly, the fans. No coincidence the price Ipswich charge their fans and their alarming drop in attendance
