The players would have a choice: stick with the bigger club and play every week for the reserves in front of three men and a dog, or do not renew your contract with the bigger club and move to a smaller team, in Townsend's case from Spurs to QPR, and play in front of thousands of people in the Football League. I think that most players would choose to move, and if they don't, that just opens up opportunities for other players (opportunities that are taken away when somebody comes in on loan). The cost to the smaller clubs would not be a factor as most of the moves would be when the player's contract ends or is terminated by mutual consent.
But Walker and Townsend when they came were halfway through their contracts. Lets just pretend we couldnt afford to buy them at the time (which was actually reality for us not long ago) and we didnt have adequate replacements internally that could make the step up. We could borrow them I guess...

...oh wait, thats what already happens ;)
You are missing my point entirely. With no loans we would NOT be able to borrow them. And perhaps, knowing their options, the contract they signed a year or two prior would have been with US rather than Spurs. And perhaps other talented players who are currently still being hoarded by the big clubs would be doing the same, to the benefit of the smaller clubs and the detriment of the bigger ones.

Is that not the biggest detriment possible then to the smaller clubs, if they cant even get the players in in the first place? Would lower league clubs have £xmil to sign an unproven youngster?

No! The smaller clubs would get these players under contract, rather than on loan. They would pick them up when their "big club" contract runs out. Take Townsend, for example. When he signed his current contract with Spurs, what if he knew that the only way he would get to play first team football would be to crack the Spurs line up. Would he have signed it? Facing the strong possibility of 3-4 years of reserve football, maybe not. In which case when it ran out he could have joined any club he wanted to, perhaps us. And then if he played well for us and Spurs came calling, they would have to pay a tidy little transfer fee to get him back!
There are 92 x 11 first team places in the English Prem + Football League. That number does not change. Whose interests does it serve if more than 11 of those places are taken up by Spurs? Not ours! The loan market is yet another mechanism designed to keep the rich teams richer. Years ago there were no loans, and guess what, there was a lot more parity in the Football League!

You're not really suggesting anything new. For example, Cesc Fabregas - Barca > Arsenal free > Barca 25mil
I honestly cant see anything positive about getting rid of the loan option!
I'm not sure I can explain it any more clearly than I have done already. Getting rid of the loan option is nothing new, it always used to be that way.
If competitive balance in football is not important to you then you would not see any benefit to getting rid of loans, because an improvement there would be the main benefit (assuming that funnelling more money to the smaller teams would translate into better teams).

Think people are forgetting that loan system saved us a few times when we were skint and in the 3rd tier. Now we are rich and don't need it anymore, your happy to ditch the system and screw other clubs over. I swear we have too many 10 year olds on here or people with short memories. The idea of ditching the loan system??? Homer Simpson would say D'oh!!!

10 years old?! You can see from my signature that my first QPR match was in 1973, so do a bit of pre-schooler arithmetic! I think you must mean too many people on here with IQs less than 80 who can't do a bit of simple arithmetic. My arguments above are pretty clear. The loan system, for smaller clubs like us, is short term gain for long term pain. If you don't understand that, I'm not surprised!

wondered who this Tom Carroll fella was, saw him last night performing for the spuds. Now that is a QPR player if ever I saw one, exactly what we need, season with us would suit all parties
I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most

Yes, I know that so long as the loan market is there we have to use it. Great avatar by the way - Dave Clement was class!
