Besides, many people don't see themselves as British, but English, or Scottish, or Welsh, and each of those are legally identified nowadays according to the census of 2011. I see myself as English, which is my right, not British, and certainly not a 'Brit'.

You will also be aware that the likes of Green, SWP, and AJ were England internationals, not British internationals. How do you know that those players may or may not be offended by being labelled 'Brits'?
What if they are happy to see themselves as British in addition to English, like the huge majority of people?

Your example is erroneous as Brit is by no means used as a derogatory term, regardless of how you view it.

Here's some evidence citing a YouGov poll: http://syniadau--buildinganindepende...itish.html?m=1

You make the claim about a 'huge majority'. I'd be interested in seeing your evidence for this claim.

Slightly misleading as that question appears to make people choose between British and English. I'd like to see a survey asking how many people see themselves as both British and English.

I don't have survey results to support what I said, just going on the fact that you are the only person in the UK I've come across that denies his Britishness so pedantically.

I'm sure there are more like yourself, and more power to you, but not sure that there are many that care too much either way. IMO

To be really really pedantic, I think you'll find people in Ireland have been known to use the term 'Brits' in a derogatory way.
"Steve, do you think 25k is a good option when there are indications that within four years, new stadiums on average have increased attendances of 60%?
For us that would mean around 29k."

                Fair point.

There are a myriad of other derogatory terms for the British/English used all over the world tbf. Certainly doesn't have the same stigma as some of the other racial epithets, and I've certainly not ever encountered it as a specific insult.

I have heard 'tans' used more by some Irish people to refer in a derogatory manner to Brits though.

You obviously don't get out much. There's lots of people who deny their Britishness. Visit Scotland and Wales sometime to see for yourself.

As a long-standing member of the Campaign for an English Parliament, I see the results from surveys and polls on a regular basis, and I can tell you quite categorically that there are millions who do not see themselves as having dual identity. I can back up my claims with plenty of evidence. Can you? If not, it's best to keep quiet.

I'm be happy to not worry about it ever. I enjoy my Englishness, Welshness and Britishness equally.

I'd be ecstatic if you could let someone else mention the word British without jumping on with ridiculous pedantry.

I can assure you, they're probably not just doing it to annoy you.

I don't have a problem in the slightest when people label themselves as British. It's when people begin labelling others without knowing their viewpoint is what is annoying.

Oh, and some people slate others as pedantic when they aren't able to construct a reply.....

As I say, call yourself what you want, but please don't speak for others.
