The fact that you need an explaination underlines my point.
Ray Wilkins is a Rangers Legend. One of the best, and most influential, midfielders to put on a Rangers shirt. Gerry's team would be nothing without him, Les Ferdinand career would be nothing without Ray's influence.
We were fifth from bottom when Ray took over as manager, finishing the season in the top ten. The only reason we were relegated was because Les and Clive Wilson left the club. D(R)FE, who really comes across as rather dumb, talks about the defence he ruined. We had the best defence under Gerry, ruined by Richard Thompson when he sold Darren Pea****. Ray couldnt prevent Wilson from leaving and we lost David Bardsley to injury in the relegation season. Rufus was never going to be the next Wilson but he later returned to the Premier League with Fulham and West Ham so I guess he wasn't all crap eh? Gregory Goodridge lost his work permit? Wow what a loss. Guess he should have played a player that wasn't good enough just so he could renew his work permit? A player like Les was always gonna be impossible to replace for a small club like QPR. Remember Baggio to QPR? Going for Hateley was not a bad move on paper. He had a great career north of the boarder and great experience. So it didn't work out for him at QPR, sometimes that happens. Ned Zelic was a very good footballer, went on to have a great career in Germany, unlucky for us and Ray that he wasn't mentally ready for the bright lights of London. Sure Ray made mistakes, should have hung up his boots earlier and given Simon Osborn the chance. But to ramble on about how he destroyed the club and we must seek revenge...just plain and simple *****talk

Here is what Alan McDonald had to say about it:
"It was then that the club started going downhill, not because they got rid of me I hasten to add! That’s when the rot started to set in, personally speaking, if I’m going to be totally honest with you, the rot set in when they got rid of Ray Wilkins. He came in during a difficult period, Gerry had left, everybody was concerned about that ‘cause Gerry had been so popular so they appointed Ray to appease the fans.

Ray was a new manager and of course he made mistakes, we all make mistakes, Ray is one of the nicest guys you’ll meet in football, lovely man and he said himself there’s things he would change but he was an inexperienced manager, straight into a difficult period then of course we got relegated from the Premier League. That was difficult, then three games into the new season we were top of the league we’d won two and drawn one and they sack him!

I must admit the disappointment of being relegated was one of the lowest points of my life and we all went away in the summer, had a good break, and we came back pre-season and we had a real good chat in the training ground with Frank Sibley and Ray Wilkins and all the squad. I’d never seen a more determined bunch of lads, we felt we’d let Ray down, we’d let the club down and we hadn’t performed well that year in the Premier League. So we had a really good chat, everybody worked so hard, it’s the hardest I’d ever seen us work pre-season and we were absolutely flying in pre-season and we started the season brilliantly we went down and beat Portsmouth, unfortunately Kevin Gallen got that injury, we’d beaten Oxford at home and went up and drew with Wolves. So were sitting with seven points out of nine from three games, then they drop a bombshell that they’d sacked Ray. They lads were so deflated after that, we’d all pulled together in pre-season so we couldn’t understand why they’d done it."

Richard Thompson, Chris Wright and Stewart Houston are the ones you socalled supporters should be blaming :anger:

And I will never forget the look on Grobelaar's face as he picked the ball out of the back of the net in front of The Loft after Ray Wilkins had smashed an unstoppable shot past him.
Wilkins played some great games for us.To suggest that he single-handedly destroyed our club is just plain wrong.

Frode great piece mate. But ask yourself why the board, as an astute group of busnissmen got rid of Wilkins? there was more to it than was known publically.
Despite Wilkins early success this was mainly due to the legacy of Gerry it was the team that he built that Butch inherited.. When it was "his team" we went downhill rapidly and despite Alan Macs quotes I'm afraid he had well and truly lost the dressing room (fact) as none of the lads had any time for his lack of Manergerial nous (fact) and as you state he made mistakes at his own addmitance. why are you defending the man!!

Frode - you are absolutely correct. Anyone who ##### off Ray Wilkins is a fool and really doesn't understand how football clubs are run at all.

Ray was a playing legend for us, so on that basis alone he deserves credit and a great reception.

As a manager he was new, and I believe Macca to be telling the truth. Why oh why was he sacked? He lost Les, and any team would struggle if they lost Les unless it was a top 4 club. He lost Willo, again another massive loss.

The reason the club went downhill was due to the boardroom. Had we a boardroom like Middlesborough then I think the club would be in a much stronger position that it is now.

Hindsight is a great thing. Hateley was on paper a decent signing, but wasn't actually 100% fit. As we do at QPR we all put loads of pressure on him to be the new Les, which he wasn't.

Ray Wilkins is a QPR legend. Have some respect. Yes he made mistakes, but as Macca said, he admits to those and he was a new manager. Of course you lot never make mistakes. *****s.

Strange post! No-one said that we (I) don't make mistakes! What's that got to do with it!!! As far as Ray being a QPR legend, well legend is a bit strong as I'm sure he's seen by most as a Chelski & Man U legend anyway there is no disputing his contibution on the pitch. For that I have total respect for the man. He was a great player as I found out personally when I played against him aged 15!!! It was just that he was a sh1te manager!!!

As I have already said the Hatley signing was entirley down to Butch and anyone who was around at the time could plainly see that he was past it and it was adeal that a few people did very nicely out of.

Gerry's team that were 5th from bottom when Ray took over. Proving that Gerry's team without Ray in the middle wasn't all that. When it was "Ray's team" he was without Les and Clive. Any manager would struggle!
Sure there might be more to his sacking than was known publically, still think Wright wanted in his own man. Think it's quite obvious why I'm defending him...single handedly ruined our club? Even you have to admit it's a bit(!) harsh???

I don't agree he was a sh1te manager... If Macca says that the dressing room were behind him, I believe that to be the case. Yes he made some mistakes, but what he had to overcome (loss of Les) was mammoth to be honest. And to be sacked after 3 games when 7 points out of 9 is pathetic.

We can disagree on whether Ray was a decent manager, that's fair enough, but surely you accept that 2 wins and a draw out of 3 games is hardly sacking material - if they were gonna sack him, wrongly in my opinion, then why not do it at end of previous season to give a new guy a proper go. Stupid stuff.

OK perhaps abit harsh but nevertheless he did "large it up" at the time and as the man in charge he was accountable. The biggest mistake was probably appointing Houston as his replacement!!!

                          Wrongity, wrong.

                          Laughably wrong.

Hateley - a mistake - but one with good grounding. Hateley wasn't bought to replace Les. He was brought in to mentor Dichio whilst creating more room for Gallen and Barker. He underwent a thorough medical but worsens his knees within 2 weeks of fitness training with us. Transfer fee nowhere near the £1.5m quoted at the time and much was recouped when he returned north. The mistake here was that given his fitness situation, the fee to Rangers should have been structured better.

Osborn/Sommer - very much 2nd choice signings. Were within minutes of signing Rae and Keller from Millwall which would have made the world of difference. Thompson vetoed this deal at the very last knockings for the sake of £100k (at this point he knew he'd be selling)

Was sacked by QPR after winning 2 from 3 games and losing Gallen for the season.

Left Fulham after Keegan couldn't keep his nose out of first team affairs and was given a very nice tickle by the publicity shy Fayed and Keegan for moving aside.

Moved to the role of translator to Vialli and then Ranieri and now Ancelotti at Chelsea. Was not sacked.

Why make up this stuff to fit agenda's? Many of the players and admin staff at the time will give you a picture. Macca and Mavis are particularly open on this one, esp on Chris Wright's dealings with Wilkins.

Wilkins played more games for us than Utd and almost as many as he did for Chelsea and was part of the 2nd best side I've ever seen pull on the hoops. Why denigrate the man on the back of b.ullshi.t?
