If we sack a player or manager the club would have to pay up the contract. If a player or manager was to walk off before the contract ends, the club can't do anything?

Is that correct?
Not strictly as that would be a breach of contract. In reality it probably is how it would pan out though.
I just wanted to know what protection do football clubs have, it should work both ways?
Something needs to change because players and managers have it all their way right now.
Totally agree with you. What's worse is that with players you can force them to play but you can't force them to play their best. It is all very one sided.
The way the contracts are written, I would imagine, is on the lines of ' you are contracted to play for us for one year, and we will pay you x per week'. If the player walks out then the club don't pay him, that's the deal. Do you think the club should also sue for breach of contract?

Agreed. It's a big problems in football.
Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
And many more mistakes
