You dont take into account the British work-ethic mentality. That's not xenophobia. It's cultural. Something British teams have been renowned and famous for throughout the world, to the point of envy and admiration from our continental counterparts. It's why the British Army has always been considered as the toughest in the world, for example. This is exactly what Harry is trying to build here.
Well yeah that explains so many of our fans see Barton or Mackie do the odd thundering tackle and think "hard worker" even though they both mark defenders when we have the ball, and why the opposite is true for Adel.

"Xenophobia is the irrational or unreasoned fear of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange"

I can see how sticking-to-what-you-know in cultural terms may have a certain dim rationality to it, but you do more or less seem to prove my point.

Saying "British = hard workers" and "foreigners = lazy" fits pretty well into the above definition. The fear of not appearing to "graft", as opposed to simply work hard and be professional (and make decent runs when you have the ball for eg).

There's a nice quote from Xavi here

"Maybe it's the culture, I don't know, but in England you're warriors. You watch Liverpool and Carragher wins the ball and boots it into the stands and the fans applaud. There's a roar! They'd never applaud that here."

And f ack the badge as far as he's concerned
Wow. If I ever get into selling timeshares I must remember to look you up.

      • Boring boring boring.. Still astonishes me the amount of fans willing to waste their time and effort on commenting on tarabt, a player that don't give a sh1t about us.
Seriously some of you lot have got a proper man crush, treating him like his Messi or Maradona.

        Mods should ban Adel threads

Too right, mate. Some fellas support A(del)PR or C(esar)PR rather than QPR. How anyone can defend that mercenary Cesar is beyond me. I'd sooner play Derek Richardson, if I'm honest, rather than that muppet.

these fan-***** measuring contests are so childish. i disagree with many WATRB posters on Adel (though not apparently the silent majority); that doesn't mean I need to prove my support to anyone

remind me again exactly what Cesar did that Green didn't? Apart from be foreign.

So I dislike Cesar because he's foreign, eh? Hmmmm. Can't see why I'm watching this World Cup with all these, er, foreign players playing in it. Robben must be British. And the Algeria team white. And Derek Richardson wasn't a person of colour. If I were to describe what you are I'd bother the mods and be banned, so I won't. Here we go again: This time for the slow learner. Green knuckled down and played number two in spite of being treated like s hit by Hughesless. He came down to the championship and helped get us up. For some of us that's worth a cheer. Cesar was told he was surplus to requirements, that he wouldn't be number one or number two, and that we'd be happy to let him go. He didn't go because he wouldn't take a pay cut. Simple as. And nothing to do with him being f acking foreign.

                    • I'm happy to leave it up to HR. If he gives him a go great stuff, if he jogs him on (again) so be it.

One half of one game and you wonder why they didn't want to sign him, blinkered or what !

I have been strong on my views of Adel but I with you guys on this too. If Harry sees a role for him and thinks he can get him bubbling and most importantly Adel is prepared to knuckle down regardless of what role he has in the squad that's good enough for me

I would still need to be won over but Im open to that happening if its possible

But as we have seen in the world cup, good honest british toil isnt good enough on its own. Successful prem teams have a mixture of hard toiling workhorses in the carragher mold who are often - though not exclusively - british and a few flair players (who are often but not always foreign). Nico and morrison didnt shape up and minus adel we dont have a single player who can really unlock a defence with a great pass or run. Sure you need your hod carriers like barton but you also need a few players with technique like adel. It need not be adel but it needs to be someone. In an ideal world the player will have skill and a work ethic, like ronaldo. But if there is such a player available to us, i havent read about him. I thought even the most traditional english fan accepted this need for balance and realised what continental flair had added to the domestic game for at least the last two decades.
