Todays bets:
Beverley 2.30
Many of these have to prove themselves over this trip and/or on faster ground but plenty could improve for it. At double figure prices both Oriental Cavalier and Classic Contours make some appeal. Oriental Cavalier finished off last season by going close in a one mile Nursery at Pontefract. Under pressure some way from home he stuck to his task really well and, but for being slightly squeezed for room close home, would've probably finished third. The for of that race has worked out quite well and he gave the impression he would be suited by a step up in trip (even if his breeding doesn't). He is also bred to appreciate slower ground and his progression to date has been in G/S-soft conditions. However he doesn't have the action of a horse who would be inconvenienced by quicker ground. Fitness has to be taken on trust but the booking of Robert Winston (not a common one for either Trainer or Owners) suggests the horse will be ready to do himself justice. Classic Contours ran below par on his reappearance but that may have been needed. He signed off last season with a close sixth in a 20 runner Nursery over seven furlongs at Redcar. Up with the pace from the outset he seemed to get outpaced into the latter stages of the race before staying on again at the death. He looks likely to be suited by this stiffer test and looks on a reasonable mark of 61. Proven on faster ground he represents a stable who are showing tentative signs of finding some form.
Selection ORIENTAL CAVALIER. 1 point win @ 12/1 (General)
Selection CLASSIC CONTOURS. 1 point win @ 20/1 (General)
Perth 2.40
In a race likely to be run at a decent pace, Ormello is the suggestion now he encounters faster ground. He hasn't run badly in two of his last four races over two miles under conditions slower than ideal and it's safe to say that soft/heavy ground over 22-24 furlongs placed much to much emphasis on stamina in his other two outings. His last win came over this C/D from a four pound lower mark and this race could pan out nicely for him if he avoids any serious mistakes. A regular in his time at this track Ormello showed enough on his second start back from a break last time out to warrant consideration under more suitable conditions.
Selection ORMELLO. 1 point E/W @ 9/1 (General)
Perth 3.40
Selection POSSOL. 2 point win @ 9/2 (Sportingbet)
Beverley 5.00
Selection CHEERY CAT. 1 point win @ 8/1 (General)
Selection ACE OF SPIES. 1 point win @ 10/1 (General)
Southwell 6.50
Not a bad handicap for it's class and one in which a strong gallop looks assured. It could be that one of the pacesetters doesn't come back to the field but the race will be run to suit the likes of Barataria and Having A Ball and the former is preferred. He has looked an improved horse since tackling fibresand, still appears on a feasible mark and has an eye-catching jockey booking. A tardy start aside last time out, it's likely he would've been in the frame in all seven of his races over this C/D. Tactically versatile, if he avoids any errant antics at the stalls, he is likely to be seen stalking the leaders with a view to picking them off late on.
Selection BARATARIA. 2 point win @ 7/1 (General)
